Artist Statement

Maurice’s approach to art-making is saturated with his personal view of the social and personal conflicts affecting the human condition. Maurice’s work aims to evoke a visceral and psychological response from his viewers, forcing them to confront uncomfortable realities. Aesthetically, Maurice’s intention is to maintain “drawing” as the main driver, the primary medium in all his work. Maurice is a multidisciplinary draftsman employing objects and different mediums to serve one purpose only: meaning. Maurice’s process consists of many different and connected parts, with one common denominator, the use of “black” as the essential “protagonist” in all of his work. He sees black as the perfect reflection of the human condition’s tensions mirrored between the emotions and the intellect.
